With the new year coming around in just a few weeks I wanted to make a post about how to try and make 2018 of achievements and positivity.
In all honesty every year I come up with new year resolutions and never really commit to it in the end. This year I want to change that and I’ve looked up tips and tricks on how to set attainable goals for the new year. Of course since I already researched it, I wanted to share the knowledge I’ve gathered with all of you who also struggled (and those of you who didn’t but still want to learn new ways :) ).
I guess most important is to ask yourself what you want to set as goal? Is it being more active (going to the gym, running etc.) or become better at planning your day? Getting that internship you’ve dreamt of or working at that cute cafe you’ve been visiting almost everyday? Once you know what you want, it’s important to ask yourself why. The reason why you want to do something will motivate you to actually do it. So really think it through first and write everything down and put it somewhere you can see this daily. This way you’ll turn your vision or dream into reality. Also every time you get demotivated looking at the reasons why, will make you motivated again.
Then start off with the bigger picture. Let’s take higher grades as an example. You can’t just get higher grades, there are steps you have to take before that. So let’s break it up into smaller targets, that are also more attainable: planning your day/week, going to classes and lectures, writing summaries, revising what you already know, paying more attention to the parts you don’t know yet, make flashcards etc.
These are all smaller targets to get you higher grades. If you don’t know how to plan well, you have to work on that first. Look up what the best ways are for you to plan. You can find many day/week/month planners the studyblr community has made. Going to lectures and classes gives you the chance of asking questions about the parts you don’t understand, making flashcards is a good way to revise.
After you’ve achieved your smaller targets it’s time to treat yourself to something nice. It’ll keep you motivated to stick to the bigger goal you’ve set and to achieve the other smaller targets as well. For example after a study session of 3-4 hours you can treat yourself to one episode of your favorite series (although it can distract you as well, I’m speaking from experience x’D).
Another useful way of making goals more powerful is to use the SMART mnemonic. While there are plenty of variants, SMART usually stands for (source):

Studying and getting higher grades is just one the goals you can set, as there are many more aspects of your life you probably want to change. To help you further I’ve gathered some helpful links and videos to set your goals for 2018, and makes this the best year you’ve had!
I hope this will help you guys out so we all get more out of the new year! If you wan to share other methods, don’t hesitate. Also if you want to have someone to talk to, just know that my askbox is open to anyone and everyone!!
